So these are really stupid theories, but…
What if, like… the 999 characters were in actuality completely different than their personalities on the ship? Life-or-death situations can change a person, especially when one is extremely focused on a goal, or on surviving.
As an example, here’s some crazy thoughts.
- Ace is actually a changed person, and was turning his life around before the second Nonary Game. However, once he is reminded of his past, he snaps back to the state of mind from 9 years ago.
- Snake actually isn’t princely. He wears regular clothes normally, but Zero kidnapped him when he was in the middle of trying on some new clothes Clover bought for him. He felt the need to keep up a sophisticated persona during the second Game because he felt it would get him respect.
- Santa eventually came to admire Hongou’s devious tactics after the first Nonary Game. While he wanted to save his sister more than anything, he couldn’t help but feel some sort of sick fascination with Hongou’s ruthless nature. This is why he didn’t kill him in the ship.
- Clover is a slut. Plain and simple. She’s not as innocent as she looks - nor as angelic and cute and kawaii desu ne!1 She’s quite the bad girl underneath, sneaking off when her brother isn’t “looking” (so to speak).
- Junpei’s jokes are his way of suppressing terrible memories and situations. He escapes into a humor-filled world to avoid reality.
- June actually was flirty and cute. But she needed to survive, so she did what was necessary. She saw putting bombs in people as necessary, apparently… though she did feel remorse after they asploded.
- Seven is brilliant. So brilliant, in fact, that people judge him by his “ugly” appearance, dubbing him stupid. But during the game, he cracked under the pressure and his intelligence regressed.
- Lotus is kind. Like, donates to animal shelter kind. But once put into a situation, she freaks and gets pissy. Really, really pissy.
- The 9th Man was listening to Hongou, of course, when he went through Door 5. But a part of him was also curious. He has a sense of morbid curiosity in that regard; he wanted to see if he would live or die. And like Seven, under the pressure, he cracked. Only, in a different way. He was actually a calm and composed person before being kidnapped.
